On May 8, CMS unveiled a new mandatory Medicare payment model to test performance-based incentives for hospitals that coordinate kidney transplants for patients with ESRD.

The model, called Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA), will begin in January 2025 and will last six years. Selected non-pediatric transplant hospitals will be required to participate if they have conducted at least 11 transplants during a three-year baseline period, and the program expects to enroll approximately 90 of the 257 transplant hospitals in the U.S..
